Article Abstract:
Environmentalists are concerned about usage of plastics, but they can cause less environmental damage than alternative materials. There are problems with recylcing plastics, which often replace materials that can more easily be recycled. Energy can be saved by using plastics sincethey are light and strong, and less space is used by plastics than many other materials when they are put in landfill sites. Companies making plastic products need to ensure that they are used responsibly and do not litter streets and verges.

Article Abstract:
Research into plastics has led to the development of new products that do less damage to the environment. Cargill Dow is one company involved in this research, and the company plans to invest $300 million over a two-year period in polylactide polymers which use maize as a raw material and are biodegradable. There are a number of major packaging companies interested in the new plastics. Cargill Dow is focusing on performance and price, despite the environmental advantages of the new plastics.
