Ruskin's last stand?
Article Abstract:
Ruskin College, Oxford University, England, has celebrated its centenary, but also faces problems that are linked to those of the labor movement in Britain, and problems affecting adult learning. The college traditionally accepted students from labor unions, who accounted for some 80% in the mid 1980s, but this has dropped to 30% by 1998. Funds come from government rather than labor unions as occurred previously, and a higher proportion of the intake is unemployed. Adult learning is a sector in decline since students have to repay loans, and many cannot afford to do so. The college is seeking to attract more part-time students but there is concern that standards could fall.

Living without it
Article Abstract:
There has been a drop in the recruitment of African American and Hispanic students in the most prestigious US universities, with a move away from affirmative action. There has also been stability in African American and Hispanic students in the state system as a whole, and the number of Asians has increased. Massachusetts University plans to favor students from poorer families, rather than using race as a selection criterion. The problem lies with the performance of African American and Hispanic students, and this is the key issue that should be tackled.
