Russian roulette
Article Abstract:
Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, has sacked the prime minister, Sergei Stepashin, replacing him with Vladimir Putin. The rationale behind this is not clear, and Putin is the fifth prime minister to be appointed over a period of 17 months. Yeltsin understands that elections are important, but he does not give the same weight to continuity in government. Russia faces serious problems, and economic regeneration may occur away from Moscow. Russia is likely to be taken less seriously due to the changes in government that Yeltsin has imposed.

Sorry isn't enough
Article Abstract:
Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, has apologised for the murder of the royal family eighty years previously. This apology was moving, but it avoids metioning greater issues. The number of victims in Russia's history has been large, as has the number of culprits. The regime was not defeated, as occurred in Germany with the regime responsible for the Holocaust. The Russian people may have lost the desire to know the truth, and this could be due to natinal pride, but there is a need to face past mistakes so that they are not repeated.
