Straw's welcome
Article Abstract:
British home secretary, Jack Straw, faces disputes over asylum seekers after his decision to give an amnesty to asylum seekers waiting over five years for the authorities to deal with their cases. Straw has also been criticised for comments made about gypsies. Increasing numbers of asylum seekers are being attracted to Britain, and the government considers most of these to be economic migrants rather than refugees with a real fear of being persecuted. There are problems from asylum seekers concentrated in specific areas, and the government plans to disperse them.
