SAP to establish beachhead on Wall Street
Article Abstract:
SAP AG, the German software developer, will become the largest software stock by market capitization on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) when it starts trading on the NYSE on Aug. 3, 1998. The company will begin trading with a market capitalization of $70 billion. The high stock valuation reflects the strong performance of the company, which reported a 60% sales growth in the first half of 1998 while its rivals announced disappointing results. However, some investors are still concerned about the high stock valuation, which is at a stunning 88.8 times estimated 1998 earnings. By comparison, the industry average is 61.4 times 1998 estimated earnings.

Telewest, NTL quit negotiations regarding merger
Article Abstract:
Telewest Communications PLC of UK, a cable operator, and NTL Inc. of New York have ended merger talks signalling the end of speculation regarding the consolidation of the two companies. A merger between Telewest and NTL would have created the largest cable operator in the UK with a customer base of around six million. The collapse of the planned merger is not expected to hinder the ongoing consolidation of the cable industry. Observers had seen the possibility of the planned merger's collapse in the light of the opposition of MediaOne Group Inc., a leading NTL shareholder, to the merger.
