Article Abstract:
The Benelux countries cut their contribution to 51% of the total turnover of Soci t Belge des B tons (SBB) in 1997. The Belgian construction group is developing outside its country as the margins are damaged by the very low level of prices in the construction sector in Belgium. SBB returned to a loss of BFr 23mn in 1997 following a net profit of BFr 183mn in 1996. The operating profit collapsed 38% to BFr 258.9mn in 1997 while the turnover was slighlty down to BFr 22.76bn. While developing a number of niche activities in its domestic market, SBB wants to prospect in countries with it is not present yet.

Spadel, the Belgian mineral water and squash group, made a 1997 net profit of BFr 313mn, and it posted a cash flow of BFr 1.36bn, up 19%. It expects to continue growing in 1998, due to a good start to the year, with a 4.5% rise in volume in May 1998. Spadel is going to invest BFr 414mn, twice as much in 1998 as it did in 1997. The group is going to invest BFr 650mn to BFr 700mn in a new bottling plant by the year 2000. Due to its good level of funds, it also plans to seize development opportunities and to buy brands with high potential.

Roosens Betorix marie le b ton et l'eau
Article Abstract:
Roosens Betonix has received BFr 66mn in subsidies as part of an investment of BFr 220mn. The Belgian company has set up a new production plant at Hermalle-sous-Argenteau, in the region of Li ge, near a motorway and the Albert canal. 30% of the investment went into the acquisition of a Besser press from the US. Roosens Betonix, which posted some BFr 600mn in turnover in 1997, produces and markets light and heavy construction materials. The company, worth a staff of 76, is a leader in concrete blocks and bricks in Belgium.
