Seagram Manufacturing Pvt Ltd (SMPL) was set up in 1995 as a subsidiary of Seagram Company Ltd. It launched Something Special and 100 Pipers in 1995. It has applied for import license for Scotch concentrate in 1998-99. It manufactures Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), white spirits like Seagram's Extra Dry gin. It has eight products in its portfolio. It has categorised its liquor into core and tactical products. It made a sales of 3.25 million cases of Royal Stag in 1997-98. Royal Stag is a mid priced blended whisky and a high volume product from the company. It sold 2,000 cases of Something Special brand in 1997-98. It sold 100,000 cases of 100 Pipers which contributed 40 percent to the sales in 1997-98. Something Special was relaunched as a 12 year old scotch in end 1996. It has projected a sales of 1.3 million cases for 1998-99. It sold 0.5 million cases in 1997-98. It has manufacturing facilities at Darula in Uttar Pradesh, and Hyderabad. It plans to set up two more facilities soon. (rk)

MALLYA, KISHORE MAY REACH TRUCE OVER HERBERTSONS
Article Abstract:
The dispute between Mr Vijay Mallya and Mr Kishore Chhabria over control of Herbertsons Ltd, is expected to end in a negotiated settlement. Herbertsons is the second largest spirits company of the United Breweries group and Mr Chhabria is the vice-chairman of Herbertsons. Mr Mallya will acquire Mr Chhabria's stake in Herbertsons for Rs120 crore. Mr Kishore Chhabria and his associates hold a stake of around 5.73 percent in Herbertsons. The total share capital of the company amounts to Rs9.5 crore and its scrip is priced at Rs40. Mr Chhabria is likely to exit from his post of vice chairman after Mr Mallya acquires the stake. (gsh)

MALLYA EYES SALT LAKE STADIUM

Mr Mallya, chairman of the UB Group, has evinced interest in acquiring the Salt Lake Stadium in Calcutta on lease. He acquired the Mohun Bagan and East Bengal soccer clubs in early 1998. The two soccer clubs are now known as McDowell-Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher-East Bengal. It is reported that the group has invested about Rs2.75 crore in each club to build up their soccer teams. The UB Group has agreed to renew its sponsorship of the KBL Federation Cup for another three years. (khr)
