Article Abstract:

A merger between the two major Danish dairy companies MD Foods and Kl ver Maelk is more likely after the merger between Danish Crown and Vestjyske Slagterier into the largest slaughter-house company in Europe. International competition is as tough in the dairy sector as for slaughter-houses. So says Knud Erik Jensen, chairman of MD Foods. He hopes that the merger between the slaughter-house companies will make Kl ver Maelk more positive towards a merger with MD Foods. According to Knud Erik Jensen, streamlining of activities would cut costs by DKr 200-300mn (USD 30-43mn). In addition, synergy effects would be achieved in sales and distribution.

DENMARK: MD FOODS TO SELL OFF KLOVER MAELK?

Article Abstract:

To approve the merger with the Swedish company Arla, the European Commission is likely to request that MD Foods sells off Klover Maelk. The merger gives the Commission the opportunity to break the monopoly on the Danish dairy market, the paper writes, referring to an anonymous source in the Commission. However, MD Jens Bigum of MD Foods says it would be impossible to separate the former Klover Maelk from MD Foods as the companies are fully integrated. Moreover, the owners of co-operative dairy companies can not be placed on an equal footing with shareholders in limited companies, Mr. Bigum says.
