SMALL CARS DRIVE INTO NON-METROS IN TOP GEAR
Article Abstract:
Saturation and overflow in the metropolitan cities have made non- metros a potential market for small cars. Small volume base, shift in consumption patterns and changing life-styles and mind- sets have resulted in the growth of demand for compact cars in non-metro cities and towns. Sixty percent sales of Maruti Udyog's Maruti 800 model came from the non-metro market during April- December 1998. The non-metro sales for its Zen model for the same period was put at 55 percent. Daewoo's Matiz sales was 1,016 units for November 1998. Out of this, only 389 cars or 38.3 percent accounted for the metro market. As far as Tata's Indica is concerned, the non-metro market share is slightly higher than 35 percent. (kp)(m)
