SMARAT CARD PAYPHONE IN ANDHRA SOON
Article Abstract:
Tata Teleservices Limited (TTL), the license holder for basic telephony services in Andhra Pradesh, has tied up with Schlumberger Measurement & Systems India (SMSI) to launch the smart card payphone technology in Andhra Pradesh (AP). AP becomes the first state in India to have the facility. The payphone network will provide its customers with local STD/ISD booths operated on smart card technology. The company will install 1,700 booths in the first year and will become operational in the third quarter of 1998 in Hyderabad. (uh)

HLL-ISEC RURAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN SOON

Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) has tied-up with the Institute for Social and Economic Change (Isec) to start a rural development programme in Karnataka. Management trainees from HLL will work under the guidance of Isec in rural development projects. The first programme will be undertaken at Neelasandra village in Bangalore rural district. A free health camp will be conducted in association with the department of health and family welfare of the Karnataka government. HLL has conducted similar programmes in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. (khr)

L&T TO DOUBLE ANDHRA CEMENT UNIT'S CAPACITY
Article Abstract:
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) proposes to raise the capacity of its cement plant situated at Tadpatri, Ananatpur district, Andhra Pradesh at a cost of Rs600 crore. The capacity of the unit will be raised to four million tonnes per annum (tpa) from two million tpa. L&T is raising the capacity of the plant at Anantpur as good limestone reserves are available there. It has three other plants in Chandapur (2.55 million tpa), Pipavav (1.50 million tpa) and Raipur (1.50 million tpa). (ag)
