Nestle India manufactures instant coffee, infant foods, milk products, noodles, confectioneries and semi-processed food products. It has facilities at Moga, Cherambadi, Nanjangud, Samlakha, Ponda and Bicholim. It has spent Rs3.5 billion on expansion and modernisation of its facilities. It has restructured its soya operations. It recorded a growth of 23 percent in sales at Rs1,216.2 crore and 33 percent in net profit at Rs66.4 crore in the 9 months ended September 1998. Its operating profit margin was 13.5 percent. In the first half of 1998, SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceutical (India) Ltd (SBPIL) posted 25 percent rise in its sales at Rs154.53 crore. Its net profit increased by 12 percent to Rs14.61 crore. Credit Lyonnais India has projected a net profit of Rs69.20 crore for SBPIL in 1998. Its net profit increased by 70 percent to Rs33.19 crore and sales by 30 percent at Rs231.43 crore in 1997. Its return on average net worth was 30 percent in 1997. It is a zero-debt firm. It makes drugs. (rk)
