SOYAMEAL EXPORTS COULD TOUCH 5 M T BY 2002

India hopes to double its soyameal exports to five million tonnes by the year 2001-02 (November-October). According to Soyabean Processors Association of India (Sopa), the country has earmarked an area of 6.3 million hectares for soyabean cultivation during 1998-99 (5.6 million hectares during 1997- 98). The availability of soyabean during 1997-98 was five million tonnes as against installed capacity of 15 million tonnes. A large number of soyabean units were forced to close down as these were operating at much less than their installed capacities. (gs)

CHINA TO REMAIN BIGGEST MARKET FOR INDIAN SOYAMEAL EXPORTS

China is expected to remain the single biggest market for exports of soymeal from India. Attractive prices and improved quality are expected to increase exports to China from about one million tonnes in 1997-98 to about 1.2-1.3 million tonnes in 1998-99. Indian soymeal is currently quoted at $130 per tonne compared to $240 per tonne levels in 1997-98. India's soymeal exports are expected to be about 3 million tonnes in 1998-99 against 2.8 million tonnes in 1997-98. (khr)

REAL FALL PRESSURES INDIAN SOYAMEAL PRICES

The export prices of Indian soyameal declined on January 14, 1999 due to the surprise move of Brazil's central bank, which effectively deserved the Real, its currency, by about 8 percent. Indian exporters said that there were no buyers even at $127-128 per tonne. Severe competition from South American exporters has adversely affected sales of Indian soyameal to the Asian region. (khr)
