YARN MILLS SPIN THIN PROFITS, 57 MORE GRIND TO A HALT

Spinning mills have shown meagre profits while 57 units have closed down in 1998 as the industry is passing through its worst crisis. The target for the export of cotton yarn has been reduced to $1.6 billion for 1998-99 compared to $1.7 billion in 1997-98. But exports have only been $1.06 billion during the first nine months of 1998-99. (khr)

Ambika Cotton Mills Ltd has posted a net profit of Rs2.27 crore for the first nine months (April-December) of 1998-99. It has recorded total sales of Rs32.21 crore of which local sales were Rs11.22 crore. Its export income rose by 65 percent to Rs20.99 crore. (gs)(m)
