SUGAR OUTPUT ESTIMATED TO TOUCH 155 LT NEXT YEAR
Article Abstract:
The sugar industry in India is expecting a bumper crop of sugarcane in the October-September 1998-99 sugar year. Sugar production is expected to be 155 lakh tonnes (lt). Though sugar mills are showing 55 lt as their opening stock, the Government of India has already contracted to import 14 lt of sugar. Maharashtra is likely to produce 57 lt of sugar - 20 lt more than that in the 1997-98 sugar year. Sugar production in Karnataka is likely to increase by 4 lt, in Tamil Nadu by 5 lt and in Andhra Pradesh by 2.5 lt. Uttar Pradesh, which has been hit by floods, may produce 41 lt (39 lt). In Maharashtra, around 25 mills, which had closed their operations, will resume their operations due to the availability of sugarcane. (gs)

VM Salgaocar Sales International was set up with the main objective of promoting and developing export markets for iron ore produced by small mine owners in Goa. It currently buys processed iron ore and exports it to new markets. The company has increased its export turnover from Rs0.87 crore in 1991-92 to Rs26.60 crore in 1997-98. It is in the process of upgrading its process technology to enhance its performance in the export markets. It is also diversifying to widen its mineral ores export range. (khr)
