TEA
Article Abstract:
Tea plantation in South India is concentrated in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu and Idukki district in Kerala with number of growers estimated at 50,000. The small growers contribute around 50 million kilograms (kg) accounting for 24 percent of the total production of South India. Nilgiris has around 100 bought leaf factories and 16 co-operative factories to cater to the small growers. These factories purchase the green leaf from the growers for manufacture and sale. South India accounts for the entire instant tea exports from India with nearly 1,700 tonnes valued at Rs40 crore shipped in 1996. By the year 2001-02, the government has projected a national tea production of 1,000 million kg with the southern region accounting for 235 million kg. (gsh)

TEA OUTPUT MAY TOUCH A HIGH OF 860 M KG THIS YEAR
Article Abstract:
The tea output is likely to be 860 million kg in 1998, about 15 million kg more than the earlier estimate. The Tea Board had revised its estimate to less than 860 million kg as southern India experienced crop loss in early 1998. Tea crop in northern India has been affected due to floods in Assam and bad weather elsewhere. Tea crop harvested in November and December 1998 has been more than that in the same months of 1997. Consequently, the estimate of tea crop in 1998 has been revised upwards. (rk)

SOUTHERN TEA OUTPUT FOR 1998 PEGGED AT 197 MILLION KGS
Article Abstract:
The tea production in South India is likely to decline by 4 percent at 197 million kgs for the calendar year 1998 (compared to 205.6 million kgs in 1997). The production of tea has been affected by erratic weather conditions. Tea production during January to November 1998 was 180.92 million kgs (186.50 million kgs). Decline in output is attributed to fall in production (112.98 million kgs for first 11 months of 1998 against 119.25 million kgs during the same period in 1997) in Tamil Nadu. (rk)
