Beating the cistern: The use of conventional water cisterns wastes both water and nutrients. But what are the alternatives?
Article Abstract:
The traditional water-flush lavatory is not necessarily the best solution for dealing with human waste. Urine typically contains 70% of the nutrients voided, and, if placed in a carbon-rich environment the nutrients can be oxidized into stable, organic compounds. Faeces are high in carbon and can contain bacteria and parasites, and in water anaerobic decomposition is slow. However if not placed in water they are broken down by bacteria and soil creatures. Alternatives to the water-flush WC include composting waterless WCs, urine-separating WCs, and anaerobic digesters.

There's more to paint thhan meets the eye
Article Abstract:
Architects and manufacturers should co-operate to ensure the right paint product is specified. Architects need to be sure manufacturers' technical information is accurate, well researched and timely. Architects should contact manufacturers early and use their expertese and advice. Manufacturers' abilities should be judged on their understanding of the architect's method of work, standardised documentation and service support. Crown Berger offers a full specification and advice service and welcomes enquiries from architects.
