Article Abstract:
Taiwan could be allowed to become a sovereign nation by China, or China could change to the extent that unification would not present a problem to the Taiwanese. The future of Taiwan is linked to that of China, and there is a risk of war. The behavior of China toward Hong Kong will affect the attitudes of the Taiwanese toward China. China is also becoming more market-oriented, and could become more democratic. There may also be no change over the medium term, such as ten years or so.

Article Abstract:
Taiwan tends to treat foreign journalists well since it needs an international voice, and there is often little interest in Taiwan. This changes when the threat of military action becomes apparent, since as an occasion when China fired two missiles off the coast of Taiwan. China still considers Taiwan to be part of China, and there is a long-term civil war, but an attempt to recapture Taiwan would lead to great bloodshed, so China has refrained from doing so.
