Saving St Michael
Article Abstract:
Marks and Spencer PLC Chairman Sir Richard Greenbury admits the company will have some difficulty in increasing UK sales due to the economic slowdown. He is adamant the store managers are given sufficient power to run their own shops and he denys central management has too much control. Greenbury is unhappy how the fight to take over the role of chief executive was handled. Greenbury relinquished the role in 1998, in preparation for his retirement in 2000. It is predicted profits will decline to around 652 million-675 million pounds sterling from a high of 1,168 million pounds sterling.
