Article Abstract:

Abdollah Nouri has been on trial in Iran, before traditionalist theologians in a move by conservatives to cancel him as a political force. Nouri is a cleric who has opened a debate on the role of religion in Iran. He argues that force should not be used to impose religious beliefs. Nouri was a candidate for parliamentary speaker, and his withdrawal from the candidacy could help to promote reform by allowing a candidate to be chosen who would be less divisive. Meanwhile, the conservatives may have to move more toward the center in order to attract more votes.
