New party, old politics: financial links cloud leader's image
Article Abstract:
Morihiro Hosokawa, leader of the Japan New Party (JNP), has acknowledged questionable financial ties with the Sagawa Kyubin Group, a trucking firm that reportedly transfers funds from organized crime to corrupt politicians. The firm lent money to Hosokawa with which he acquired several homes. Though the deals were technically legal, Hosokawa's willingness to receive money from such a source has damaged his effort to portray JNP as a reformist alternative to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Into the unknown: all political bets are off after Kanemaru arrest
Article Abstract:
The indictment of former Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Shin Kanemaru in Mar 1993 for tax evasion has thrown Japanese politics into turmoil. Kanemaru has been accused of failing to pay taxes on $14 million worth of income. The Kanemaru Affair has endangered the LDP's 39-year lock on power and has prompted calls for political reform. Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa has proposed reforms including single-member constituencies in parliament.
