Second coming: Kim Dae Jung returns top politics
Article Abstract:
South Korea's Kim Dae Jung announced his return to politics on June 27, 1995, receiving widespread criticism in part for his decision to form a new party rather than rejoin his old one. The former three-time opposition presidential candidate's move may split his former party, the Democratic Party, with 68 of its 96 legislators ready to bolt and 18 more wavering, out of the 291 total in the national assembly. Newspapers and other parties decried his action as crass office-seeking following a strong showing by the opposition in recent elections.
