Money is power: cost of politics escalates with more democracy
Article Abstract:
South Korean tycoon and founder of Hyundai Corp Chung Ju Yung shocked the public when he revealed his huge financial contributions to Pres Roh Tae Woo. Aside from the 10 billion won ($12.7 million) he gave to Roh for supposedly charitable purposes, Chung also declared contributions to Park Chung Hee. Exorcising the past: nation transfixed by ex-presidents' trial
Article Abstract:
The trial of two former presidents in South Korea has the nation rivetted, and it has boosted current president Kim Young Sam's political fortunes but could backfire in that regard. Free to prosper: president stresses democracy and economic growth
Article Abstract:
South Korean Pres Kim Young Sam discussed his first 100 days in office on Jun 14, 1993. He argues that economic development and political democracy go hand in hand. His primary objectives are to eliminate corruption, to energize the economy and to foster a disciplined government. He completely discounts the idea that the military may try to overthrow him lest he threaten its political clout. He distrusts North Korea and hopes to improve trade relations with the US.
