Mutual attraction
Article Abstract:
Investors in Japan are favoring mutual funds with the flexibility to pull out of the stock market and turn to other sectors when greater profits beckon. Closed-end funds, which are tied to the stock market, contained more assets than open-ended funds until 1993. The stock market crash of 1990 swung interest away from the closed funds, and assets have declined steadily since then. The closed funds were promoted by brokers over open funds, and the shift to open funds indicates greater sophistication of investors.

Men's magazines
Article Abstract:
The growing popularity of men's magazines in Japan reflect a change from the hard working and frugal lifestyle of Japanese men to a lifestyle that emphasizes fun and consumption. The magazine Popeye, first published in 1977, pioneered the concept of easygoing and fun-loving young Japanese men. Popeye spawned dozens of competitors. However, it continues to be the most successful of the magazines catering to the young Japanese male market.
