Securing space for the military
Article Abstract:
Hypersonic military spaceplanes are being developed to meet the US Air Force's requirements under its doctrine of global engagement. The spaceplanes will give the Air Force the capability for space control and launching reconnaissance and strike missions from space. Two spaceplanes currently being developed are the rocket-powered Lockheed Martin X-33 and Boeing's Future-X. The X-33 is expected to make its maiden flight some time in the year 2000 while a prototype of the Future-X is being constructed by Boeing engineers.
