Seeing the wood for the trees
Article Abstract:
Finland's largest company was created in 1996 with the merger of forestry groups Kymmene and Repola. The new entity, UPM-Kymmene, accounts for 17% of Finland's total exports and is a leading producer of magazine papers, newsprint and packaging materials. Following the merger, UPM-Kymmene concentrated on consolidating its operations and decided to focus on paper and pulp production, while divesting non-core activities. The company's executive vice president Martin Granholm is unworried about developments in new media technology and believes that magazines and newspapers will continue to flourish.
