Small firms: the big picture
Article Abstract:
Cash flow and late payment is cited as the main concern of one in eight small companies, sometimes leading to the downfall of a business. There has been an improvement in the relations between small companies and their banks although small companies still feel that banks are inconsistent. The main administrative burden for small companies is VAT, and there has been a call by some small businesses to combine national insurance contributions with income tax. However small businesses are moving towards bench-marking and best practice, and the government's Business Links network aims to bring together the plethora of agencies and information.

The inexperienced government of South Africa must assure the world that its economic programme is sustainable. The reconstruction and development programme (RDP) is concentrating on infrastructure, housing and education and business must play a central part in the project. The National Business Initiative has recently been launched, and many companies are battling to become the first major post-apartheid privatisation. Businesses must also consider their racial composition.

A man for all seasons: the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) promoised to boost investment in small, fast-growing companies
Article Abstract:
The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) was launched to replace the Business Expansion Scheme (BES), and is aimed at dynamic smaller companies. The home furnishings concept Jerry's Home Store, has recently raised 1.5 million on an issue under the EIS, and Brian Astley of As Far As The Eye Can See, an outdoor clothing company, is keen on the EIS, due to a reluctance to allow one major investor to take control. Under the EIS there are several shareholders.
