Seeking fortune: overseas workers reap wealth, family strain
Article Abstract:
Thailand is a major source of foreign workers in Asia with 430,000 workers going overseas in 1994 and foreign work provides many families with a sizeable income since over $880 million was sent back between Jan-Sep 1994. Becoming a migrant laborer has become a family tradition for some families but most workers only work abroad for a while and then return home to practice some other job, often farming, despite being more skilled than local laborers. One major cost of migrant labor is to families because they are separated for long periods, sometimes leading to divorce.

Graduates in demand: companies struggle to find engineers
Article Abstract:
Thai companies are being severely affected by the lack of trained engineers. Industrial demand for engineers constantly outpaces supply and engineering faculties are being overburdened. Because of the stiff competition for engineering graduates, companies have resorted to getting students to sign up even while in school. Others have been offering scholarships to students who promise to join them after graduation.
