Seemly suitor
Article Abstract:
Annuar Senawi may acquire a stake in Ban Hin Lee Bank. He has reportedly sought permission from Thailand's central bank to acquire a stake of 20%. A previous attempt to acquire the bank was made in 1993 by Quek Leng Chan, who built up a stake of 40% but did not achieve control. Another attempt was made by Ahmad Sebi in 1994. The bank has a stake held by the Yeap family, who hold from 20% to 30% and also manage the bank. It is not clear whether Annuar is buying his stake from the Yeaps or from another source such as Sebi.

Moody's blues: Bank of China protests ratings downgrade
Article Abstract:
The lowered credit rating Moody's Investors Service assigned 11 China-related Hong Kong banks angered China, but its response should be to either address the concerns expressed or become more transparent. The issue repeats a similar controversy from 1995, and suggests China has learned little about how these ratings and the system they support actually function. Beijing may be correct in claiming the lower rating is not in fact warranted, but it errs in saying it should not be subject to such independent review.

Caution reigns
Article Abstract:
Analysts see some problems in the Malaysian financial system, and expect some bank casualties, but most believe that the chances of widespread failure in the financial system are remote. Problems in the system include a loss of confidence in banking shares and a high ratio of property loans by banks. Reasons for confidence in the Malaysian banking system include the maintenance of high capital-adequacy ratios and, particularly important, efficient regulatory control by central bank Bank Negara Malaysia.
