Seiyu impresses analyst: contrarian lauds firm's steps to restructure
Article Abstract:
Stock analyst Mike Allen of ING Baring Securities is recommending a 'buy' option on stocks of Japanese retailer Seiyu, confident that the retailer's management reorganization can result in significant gains for investors. Allen believes that Seiyu's stocks can rise from its 335 yen closing on the Sept. 23 1998 trading day to as much as 1,500 yen over the next two to three years due to the diligence being exercised by Seiyu's new management in bringing back the firm to its retailing roots. The company has so far divested itself of its interests outside of retailing and plans on trimming subsidiaries down to 25 by 2002 from 101 subsidiaries. The retailer also plans on closing down 15 outmoded stores in 1997.

These companies, traditionally passed up by new graduates seeking plum positions at Japan's big firms, are now seeing an influx of fresh new talent from the country's top universities. Observers believe that these new graduates could help boost productivity and innovation at Japan's smaller companies.
