Flame war: government firms battle over Internet service
Article Abstract:
Current Vietnamese Internet service provider Netnam faces a fight with the huge Vietnam Post & Telecommunications over links to the Internet. The VNPT sems to want monopoly control over all value-added telecoms services 'to protect culture and national security.' Many observers find that excuse wanting, as Netnam is govt-owned, through the National Center for Natural Sciences and Technology. Netnam had completed negotiations with VNPT over a satellite link for full Internet service, but VNPT quashed the deal in July.

Bonfire of the vanities
Article Abstract:
An early Feb 1996 crackdown on so-called social evils, including foreign-language advertisements, may have resulted from infighting as Vietnam's Communist Party prepares for its five-yearly congress in June. Party conservatives led by Le Duc Anh, Nguyen Duc Binh, and others are shifting the party's emphasis away from the economy and arguing reformers, led by Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet, are politically deviant, leading to such imported social evils as prostitution, drug addiction, and karaoke bars.
