Article Abstract:
Maxygen is a Californian biotechnology company which is carrying out research on molocular breeding, a technique which is faster than mating. Research has been carried out in collaboration with Novo Nordisk on enzymes for use with laundry detergents. Another project is the development of a type of interferon-alpha, which can protect against infection from viruses. Vaccine development and gene therapy are the potential applications of other projects that the company is involved with.

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are now making a greater effort in researching the chemical compounds of plants to examine their medical qualities. This return to nature has been motivated by the lack of results produced by combinatorial chemistry.
