Management shortfall
Article Abstract:
A shortage of senior managers could endanger both individual European biotechnology companies and the industry as a whole. In the UK, experience is passed on through executives moving from older biotechnology companies to younger ones, but this is not happening in continental Europe as the biotechnology industry there is too new. It is difficult to encourage chief executives to leave thriving biotechnology companies, and headhunters are also unwilling to take top managers from one company in difficulties to run another, as this could have a negative impact on the reputation of all biotechnology companies.

Biotech's Father William
Article Abstract:
Alejandro Zaffaroni is 76-years-old, yet is a strong player in an industry where entrepreneurs are expected to be young. He set up ALZA in 1968, mixing biologists and engineers. This mix of discipline has been characteristic of later Zaffaroni start-ups. He has also helped researchers to start up companies when they developed ideas that were not part of the parent company's activity. He has used diversity to protect companies against the effects of being too dependedent on a few products.
