Share-allocation policy, minister's role under scrutiny at trial of 3 Malaysians
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Fazrin Azwar Mohamed Nor and two of his associates were charged with illegally obtaining stocks in Leader Universal Holdings Bhd. Fazrin's mother-in-law, Trade and Industry Ministry Rafidah Aziz, testified that his allocations were legal since they were acquired through the Malaysian government's policy of giving indigenous people greater equity stake in Malaysian corporations. However, prosecutors asserted Fazrin's relations with Rafidah constituted a 'conflict of interest.' Meanwhile, Fazrin's ongoing trial has raised questions on the legality of and the need for the government policy on giving preferential treatment to indigenous people.
