Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong insists his People's Action Party (PAP) will continue their strict economic policies which have provided Singapore with a very healthy economy. The PAP lost four seats in the last general election but insists it will maintain its strict social and political controls as well.

Where Hong Kong has the edge

The economies of Hong Kong and Singapore have grown at similar rates since 1960 despite the huge differences in government controls on investment and development of industries. Alwyn Young of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology expects Singapore's economy to have difficulties soon.
