Only a few corporations reap the rewards of improved profits, public image and employee morale from sound environmental management. This results from misinformation on the economic justifications for integrating environmental protection and human safety and health in corporate policies. Voluntary industry initiatives complement regulation in surmounting the barriers to sustainable development. Industry may team up with nongovernment organizations or government agencies to implement projects that respond to people's needs and impart their management know-how to developing nations.

Energy management in Eastern Europe and the former USSR: economic and environmental opportunities

Article Abstract:

Energy inefficiency is the major impediment to the industrial restructuring that the former USSR and Eastern European countries are undertaking. These formerly centrally planned economies have relied on energy subsidies to keep energy prices down. This is intensified by failure to shift from energy-intensive industries to modern technologies that require less energy and to integrate highly efficient technologies into their energy systems. These countries are potential markets for energy efficient services and products with the necessary financial aid and comprehensive reforms.
