Singapore barrels ahead on Jurong Island; despite slump, petrochemical complex is taking shape and luring firms
Article Abstract:
Singapore is pushing through with its plan of building a massive petrochemical complex that entails linking together seven islands through reclamation. The project will be connected to the main island by a four-lane causeway, which will soon be expanded to eight lanes. Although the Asian economic slowdown since 1997 has dampened investor interest in petrochemical projects in the region, the Jurong Island venture has attracted quite a number of companies. Analysts believe that the project will be successful but will not be without a few challenges. They foresee an increase in chemical prices in the early years of the 21st century, making producers on the island competitive in terms of costs.

Gifts present Singapore mutual funds with a dilemma
Article Abstract:
Singapore's mutual fund industry has employed freebies as part of its strategy to attract small investors, and it seems to be working. While some fund managers frown on the practice of giving gifts as part of fund purchases, others simply state that it is just a passing stage. The industry hopes that consumers will buy funds based on their knowledge of the product and not because of the freebies involved.
