Sir Vivian Fuchs

Article Abstract:

Vivian Fuchs was an explorer who traveled across Antarctica overland in 1958. He was less isolated than earlier explorers, with access to a telephone, and could use traction vehicles, with support from aircraft, but his feat was still considerable. Fuchs was also a scientist and planned his expeditions with meticulous care, carrying out serious science on his polar trek. He was bullied as a school child for having a German surname, and this appears to have strengthened his character.

Karl F. Koopman: 1920-1997

Article Abstract:

American Museum of Natural History curator Karl F. Koopman died on Sep 22, 1997 at the age of 77. Koopman is known for his interest in bats which he developed as a graduate student in Columbia University in the 1940s. He is also remembered for his attendance of every annual meeting of the American Society of the Mammalogist since the first in 1954 as well as his generosity in sharing his time and knowledge to students and colleagues alike.
