Fund managers are sticking with the tried and tested stocks, owned by an elite group of internationally competitive firms, amid a better performance by domestically oriented stocks such as construction and textile. Numerous fund managers believe that the domestically oriented stocks cannot maintain the momentum. The fund managers are hoping that the tried and true stocks will outperform the market once again in 1998 as hopes for economic stimulus are frsutrated.

Tiny Fiji stock exchange seeks growth

Fiji claims to have the smallest stock exchange in the world. The Suva Stock Exchange only has four listed companies at present. Chairman Lionel Yee is optimistic that this number will grow given the stock market's attractive characteristics, including refined trading regulations. He hopes that the bourse will attract enough new listings to generate the market liquidity necessary for a screen-based trading system.
