Skin deep
Article Abstract:
Shiseido is a Japanese cosmetics company that is expanding abroad. The company is around a quarter foreign owned and its reputation for color make-up and skin care products is good. Japan accounts for 85% of the company's sales and prices are high, while cost control is a problem, and lack of commission for sales staff undermines motivation. The company should dispose of non-core activities, according to Warburg Dillon Read's Hiroshi Okubo. Reorganization has been announced but does not appear to go far enough.
