Sleeping giant: Indian companies take aim at hi-tech exporting
Article Abstract:
Indian companies in the manufacture of computers and components are starting to seek expansion into world markets. Altos is India's leading exporter of computer hardware and has plans to export its own motherboards, based on licensed designs from Intel, a microchip firm. Many Indian companies have done well in the design and export of software but few so far have made hardware components suitable for use in PCs manufactured overseas. HCL-Hewlett Packard is aiming to export exclusively its own brand of PCs and will open a plant close to Madras in 1997. The domestic market for computers is also on the verge of expansion.

How not to get ahead
Article Abstract:
Hualon, one of the largest business groups in Taiwan, believed that moving into electronics would allow it to overcome difficult conditions in its traditional businesses of textiles, transistors and livestock. However, it found that it was unable to adapt quickly enough to trends in demand for silicon wafers and has now had to shut down its silicon wafer fabrication facility. It is one of a considerable number of Taiwanese companies in traditional industries which have unsuccessfully sought higher profits in areas such as electronics.

Left behind: Japan's electronics firms find something to make
Article Abstract:
Frenzied competition and decreased currency competitiveness are driving all but the highest-end electronics production out of Japan, and margins seem likely to decline further. New-product development and short prodcut cycles are now crucial to competitiveness, and only the most challenging devices can be made cost-effectively on the islands. Even liquid-crystal display screens and laptop-computer batteries are moving overseas, and the prices of nearly all end products are falling.
