Sleeping secrets
Article Abstract:
Anaesthetics were believed to function by dissolving in fats, but this theory was abandoned in the 1980s, and attention then focused on proteins. A University of Pennsylvania anaesthologist, Roderic Eckenhoff, has examined the stability of proteins and sees this as related to the functioning of anaesthetics. University of Colorado's John Mihic and colleagues argue that anaesthetics increase the impact of receptor molecules, and it is not clear how this model fits with that of Eckenhoff's.
