Slovakia: EVN plans to buy energy distributors
Article Abstract:
The allied Austrian energy suppliers EVN and Wiener Stadtwerke intend to acquire shares of the three Slovakian energy distributors, which are to be privatised in 2002. Two of the distributors are similar in size to EVN itself, whereas the third is slightly smaller. To do this EWN and Wiener Stadtwerke have to compete with EU energy giants, such as Electricite de France (EdF), CEZ as well as E.On. Of each distributor only a maximum of 49% can be acquired and no buyer can get all three. EVN, OMV and Wiener Stadtwerke have almost completed their deal on an alliance in gas-supply. This sector is extremely important for the energy suppliers. For EVN the gas trade accounted for some 33% of its turnover in 2001.

Austria: EnergieAllianz avoids brush with cartel court
Article Abstract:
The Austrian company EnergieAllianz will not be needing to prove itself in front of the cartel court as the all problems relating to rights of competition which have surrounded Wienstrom and EVN, have been resolved, one of the conditions being that changing supplier must be obstacle free to all clients of Allianz which may lead to an overhaul of Wienstrom's new business practice. With smaller clients, the Group has achieved a 60% market share.
