Small is beautiful
Article Abstract:
Picosatellites are very small satellites, and Aerospace Corporation has launched two such satellites in Feb 2000. They will test components and exchange information. Smaller satellites have cost advantages and offer greater flexibility. Risks can also be spread among a number of satellites, so loss of one may not have such a great impact. There is hope that costs can be reduced and picosatellites can be mass produced. This will involve continued progress in miniaturization.

Stars and gripes
Article Abstract:
Eutelsat and Societe Europeenne des Satellites (SES) are competing for a site in space at 29 deg East, originally allocated to Eutelsat, which later abandoned a project planned for the site. SES has announced that it would use 28.2 deg east, and Eutelsat has sent a satellite to 29 deg east. Both companies cannot be so close togethr, and a judgement will be passed by the International Telecommunication Union. This issues reflects wider competition between the two companies.
