Smelly? Try mail-odour
Article Abstract:
Goh Kwee Leng and his company 717 Trading have developed a World wide Web site to sell durian, a smelly fruit that is popular in Singapore. The only challenge that Goh has had to overcome in his business is delivery of the melon-sized green fruit. The odor is so unpleasant that most delivery companies will not handle it, and the Singapore subway system does not allow it onboard. His solution is to use a network of cab drivers. 717 Trading sells 5000 kg of the fruit per day during peak periods in May, June and December.

A sea change
Article Abstract:
The Portuguese Settlement in Malacca fears that a proposed land-reclamation project that would cut off its access to the sea will also destroy its culture and economic base. Descendants of sailors who arrived 500 years ago, the 1100 people in the community are also the top draw for Malacca's tourist industry, which draws 1.5 million visitors annually. The residents insist their way of life and group identity demand ocean access, and ask that if the project cannot be halted, they be granted a channel through it.

Works in progress
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's huge infrastructure plans will meet existing needs, but many experts fear they will exceed them, giving the country more than it can handle or afford. The 31 largest projects to be completed by 2020 will cost roughly $65 billion, and while they will offer needed power and reduce congestion in Kuala Lumpur, they could also overheat an economy already running at well over 8% growth. The country may lack the resources needed to finance such a boom, though lack of workers could force postponements.
