SmithKline climbs 2% on earnings

SmithKline Beecham PLC saw its share value rise by 2% as a result of its 16% rise in pretax profits for the first quarter of 1999. The company posted 510 million pound sterling ($822 million) in profits for the period. This is compared to 440 million pound sterling during the same period in 1998. Analysts had predicted SmithKline would post between 480 million pound sterling and 506 million pound sterling.

Roche's group sales rose by 4% in the first quarter

Roche Holding AG posted an improvement of 4% in group sales for the first quarter of 1999. Roche's sales rose to 6.41 billion Swiss francs ($4.32 billion) for the quarter. During the same period in 1998, the pharmaceutical firm posted sales of 6.18 billion francs. Roche also said that its key drug unit reported an 8% rise in sales that were totaled in Swiss francs.
