It is important to be innovative and imaginative in order to win business from competitors, according to Wasserstein Perella head of European mergers and acquisitions Howard Covington. He emphasizes that the bank is establishing a presence across Europe on the basis of the sectors in which it has perceived strengths, including media, chemicals and retail. He believes that the main markets are France, Germany and the UK. He indicates that the bank is mainly involved in mergers and acquisitions, but also has a rapidly expanding high-yield debt business, a principal investment business and a small equities operation.

Fleuriet quits Merrill for HSBC
Article Abstract:
HSBC France has appointed Michel Fleuriet, Merrill Lynch France advisory board Chmn, to the newly created position of Chmn. Fleuriet had worked at Merrill Lynch France since Feb 1991. In his new role, he will be responsible for business development and the coordination of investment banking and markets business with the rest of HSBC's French activities. Merrill has been very successful in 1999, and as of Sep 30, 1999, was ranked sixth by deal value in both announced and completed deals.
