Smooth operator; Olivetti pulls off Telecom Italia coup, but trouble looms
Article Abstract:
Olivetti's takeover of Telecom Italia SpA is expected to have implications for all of Europe. After Telecom Italia was taken over, its major stockholders defected. Olivetti will pay $33.3 billion for a 51.9% share of Telecom Italia. By taking over the biggest telecommunications firm in Italy, Olivetti is sending the message that the old way of doing business in Europe is no longer viable. The implications for the telecommunications industry, in which a small group of competitors is emerging to challenge big telecommunications carriers, are serious.
