Bernabe to unveil plan to merge telecom units

The chairman of Telecom Italia S.p.A. has announced a plan to prevent a hostile takeover. Franco Bernabe proposed that a merger of the company's fixed-line and cellular units would be more efficient than a takeover by Olivetti SpA. Bernabe hopes to lower operating costs and increase efficiency through the move. Ultimately, the decision to combine the two units will be made by Telecom Italia's shareholders.
