Article Abstract:
A debate on fire services in Chicago reflects changes throughout the US, where numbers of fires have dropped, while there is greater demand for other emergency services. This has led to calls for firemen to be moved to work as medical technicians. Labor union regulations have exacerbated the situation, according to officials from Chicago. The labor union is seeing a pay rise of 37% as well as two days more holiday, and the city is to make its offer in Dec 1999.
