Colombia's trembling peace
Article Abstract:
The peace initiative by the Colombian president, Andres Pastrana, has encountered a number of obstacles, though there is a strong desire in Colombia for guerrillas warfare to end. Pastrana is negotiating with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and has granted concessions which have led to opposition from the armed forces. Hostage taking by a left wing group has led to public outrage, and a bill to allow amnesties to be granted has been defeated.
